Complex Systems

Games allow players to control complex systems. For example, in SimCity, players might learn that a city cannot be built simply by manipulating one or two variables. Cities are complex systems that arise through a complex interaction of variables. Games such as Railroad Tycoon embody complex ideas like delayed feedback or positive feedback loops.

Yet, few, if any games allow players to explore such comlex systems in mathematics, science, or engineering areas. Imagine using games like SimEarth, which allows players to manipulate global geochemical and biological processes. Or, students might model complex engineering systems.
